Survival Challenge at Sea
“No way are either of my kids going to do something like that!” Diane looked as scared as she was indignant. She folded her arms across her chest protectively and shuddered a little on the park bench.
“Oh, honey, you’re just getting started.” Survival Sally reached over and patted Diane’s arm. “A few more years of home schooling will bring out the best in Bryce and Jenny. You’ll see. Remember, nobody knows your children better than you do, and Zac’s mom knows her son and has confidence he can do it.”
“Yes, but sail around the world in a yacht?” Diane’s brown eyes flashed. “I’m nervous just watching the crazy things Bryce is doing over there on the playground toys.”
“I’ll admit, Zac Sunderland’s goal is quite ambitious. He’s only 16, but he’s been around boats with his parents all his life. Young men his age went out to sea in times past.”
“Yes, but that was a long time ago, and weren’t those boys in the navy or something with a captain in charge?”
“Oh, sure, things aren’t the same these days, I know. But he’s not taking this thing lightly, Diane. He was planning to launch this past Saturday, but postponed for a couple of weeks because of some mechanical problems. That gives him a little more time to work out any last wrinkles.”
“How did you hear about him not launching? I didn’t hear anything about that in the news.”
“Oh, there’s a blog on a web site he has up. There’s a video about him and a place to click to read his blog. Sam pointed it out to me and told John he might want to put the link on his blog page, in case people want to keep up with his adventure. Sam’s pretty excited for Zac. Sam thinks it’s also a great chance to show what a home schooler can do besides win spelling bees. It will be a challenge and put the young man’s survival skills to the test, too.”
“I can believe that.” Diane shaded her eyes as her gaze followed Bryce going down the slide once more. “Well, I guess I’m just a little over protective right now, but I’m so glad we started home schooling this year.”
“Me, too, honey,” Sally said, “and you’ll never regret it. Just stay with it and let God lead you all along the way.”
