Get Info on Survival and Flood Aftermath Home Repairs

While the big news of the day is about government bailouts and the stock market, there are still many people who are coping with the aftermath of hurricanes, particularly Ike.  If you’re one of those, or know someone who is, there’s a 56 page FEMA booklet you’ll want to get entitled Repairing Your Flooded Home.

Here’s what you’ll find in this booklet.

Step 1. Take Care of Yourself First
Protect yourself and your family from stress, fatigue, and health hazards that follow a flood.
Step 2. Give Your Home First Aid
Once it is safe to go back in, protect your home and contents from further damage.
Step 3. Get Organized
Some things are not worth repairing and some things may be too complicated or expensive for you to do by yourself. A recovery plan can take these things into account and help you make the most of your time and money.
Step 4. Dry Out Your Home
Floodwaters damage materials, leave mud, silt and unknown contaminants, and promote the growth of mildew. You need to dry your home to reduce these hazards and the damage they cause.
Step 5. Restore the Utilities
The rest of your work will be much easier if you have heat, electricity, clean water, and sewage disposal.
Step 6. Clean Up
The walls, floors, closets, shelves, contents and any other flooded parts of your home should be thoroughly washed and disinfected.
Step 7. Check on Financial Assistance
Voluntary agencies, businesses, insurance, and government disaster programs can help you through recovery.
Step 8. Rebuild and Floodproof Take your time to rebuild correctly and make improvements that will protect your building from damage by the next flood.
Step 9. Prepare for the Next Flood
Protect yourself from the next flood with flood insurance, a flood response plan, and community flood protection programs. This step also includes sources to go to for additional assistance.

Keep Thinking “Survival” During Economic Upheaval

The economic events of the past couple of weeks have been shocking and fast paced.  So I caught myself up short Friday morning when I heard the news about the takeover and sale of Washington Mutual.  The biggest bank failure in U.S. history?  The figure of $1.9 billion seemed insignificant compared to the $700 billion bailout figure that’s been thrown around.  I realized I’d been a victim of desensitization.  How about you?

Then a good friend sent me an e-mail after hearing the Derry Brownfield Show that same day.  (You can click here to view Derry’s site and hear archived shows.)  Here’s an excerpt of the e-mail.

“Did you hear Derry today? His last caller was a quiet voiced woman who predicted what will happen when the Federal Reserve is given our economy. She said they will take our homes and businesses like all dictators in the past, including the pharaohs, and declare us their slaves. Then the people of the US will rise up and fight them…”

I don’t know whether people will fight back or not, but the lady caller’s other prediction could come true.  At least it’s not out of the realm of possibility.  In fact, now would be a good time to take a look at Survival Sam’s post, “An Example of Survival When Money Fails.”  Click here to read it.  How well are you prepared for survival in such a world?  Below are a couple of options to click on to get you on the right track.

Survival in Caves?

Survival Sam pushed his breakfast plate aside so Tina, our Cafe 23 waitress, could pick it up soon.  He pulled out a pocket New Testament and leafed through it briefly.  “Gentlemen, you’ve heard of the Bible’s Hall of Faith in Hebrews chapter 11?”

Duane and I nodded.  We were both familiar with it.

“Consider a portion of verse 38 from that chapter.  ‘…they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.’”

Dishes clattered at the next table as Duane lowered his coffee cup.  “What would you have us consider, Sam?”

            “Survival in caves,” Sam said.

We were both taken aback.  I felt myself blushing.  “Wait a minute, Sam, are you serious? I’ve devoted my whole blog to the idea that a person doesn’t have to go hide and build a bunker in a cave.  I’ve tried to dissuade people from the negative stereotypes about survival, and I thought you were with me on this.”

Discover Why Buying Gold Actually Jeopardizes Your Survival

The upheaval involving big name investment banks and all the talk of extraordinary government bailouts means we’ve crossed a historic threshold and have entered a new era.  Some say it’s even different than the Great Depression.  It’s open season for gold sellers, so you may have heard or seen a number of persuasive advertisements telling you to buy gold.  Are these gold sellers and their advice trustworthy?

You may have heard that gold can be a hedge against inflation for investors, but what does that really mean for you today anyway?  Do you really need to buy gold?  Gold sellers tell you it’s the right thing to do.  But your personal resources are obviously at stake, and you don’t want to use them foolishly or put them at risk.  What if buying gold actually jeopardized your very ability to survive?  there are secrets gold sellers aren’t telling you.  Do you think they have your best interest at heart?  What should you do?

Why should you be pressured to do something that’s not good for your particular situation?  Aren’t there better alternatives for you and your family?  Isn’t it important to follow a common sense strategy for economic survival?

You can put your mind at ease.  It’s not time to panic.  You can take control of your economic survival right where you are today.  While politicians scramble to keep up with the changing economic scene, do you want to wait for help from Uncle Sam when such help may not be reliable, if it’s there at all?  It looks like Uncle Sam is too busy bailing out big bankers to have time for you and me anyway, doesn’t it?  That’s in spite of all the rhetoric to the contrary.  You’ll have to look out for yourself.

You get common sense and useful guidance in The Gold Question–To Buy or Not to Buy...  This is a report that features my interview with my friend Survival Sam.  We simply looked at things as we see them and have done our best to interject some common sense into the mix in a way you can understand.  It’s not complicated doublespeak.

In The Gold Question we help you get started on a plan for survival and begin taking positive action so you’ll be prepared.  Incidentally, it might surprise you to know who else is telling you to prepare and why you should take their advice.

This isn’t about buying things you can’t use.  It’s about having what you need when you need it.  Should gold be part of the picture for you?  This report will put you on track to help you decide.

Here’s more good news.  For a very friendly price, you discover how to keep gold sellers from grabbing your valuable assets. You save yourself thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars, while starting down the path of preparedness that could save your life and that of your family.  Click here now and find out how to get your copy of The Gold Question–To Buy or Not to Buy...

Home Generator Safety for Your Survival

When electricity goes out as the result of hurricanes or other storms, we often hear news stories about people waiting in line to buy a home generator.  It may be to keep a few lights and appliances going, or for vital medical equipment for a loved one.  For many it’s their first time operating one.  The video below is especially for those who are new to home generators, but it can be helpful for those out of practice at running one.  After all, it’s not common that most generator owners need to use them on a regular basis outside of emergency situations.

The video is a brief primer on using your home generator safely.  A brief disclaimer is in order, since the video was produced by Lowe’s.  I’m not affiliated with Lowe’s, nor am I intentionally promoting their stores.  It’s not an advertisement, strictly speaking, and contains good information well worth seeing.  You are soely responsible for how you use the information provided and the results that follow.

Is it Survival Preparation or Hoarding?

These thoughts are directed at those who have the means, but are still rather timid about making preparations for survival during difficult times.  Making preparations is an excellent investment compared to Wall Street just now.  Of course, when you prepare, you’re stocking up on more of the necessities than usual.  Even though you’re discrete about doing this, there will be those who will accuse you of hoarding, whether they do it openly or in secret.  Take heart in knowing that in a time of calamity, you’ll be better off than your accusers.

Many are simply misinformed about what constitutes hoarding.  Our grandparents and great grandparents stored home canned fruits and vegetables, even canned meat, in root cellars.  This was the way it had to be to survive.  Today, while still claiming to be a land of plenty, we have somehow adopted the notion that it’s practically sinful to have more on hand than necessary.  After all, anything we need can be had from supermarkets and can be easily replenished as soon as the cupboards begin to look vacant.  Our lifestyles are based on convenience.  Agrarian ways are a relic of the past, even for many in rural areas.

Consider this as you buy extra groceries or a supply of long term storage food.  By preparing and stockpiling several months in advance, you’re not contributing to any shortages. Supply chains continuously replenish goods when there is no crisis at hand.  It’s the way business is done nowadays.  When you buy and store supplies, such as food, ammunition, and even gas in advance, you not only provide for your own needs, but you may be helping to alleviate the short-term supply disruption when disaster hits.  Only those who buy a disproportionately large supply during a crisis could be legitimately labeled as hoarders.

When you prepare well in advance you’re not part of the problem.  Instead, you’re a part of the solution.  You’ll be less dependent on others to rescue you and your family.  Furthermore, by having extra on hand, you’ll have goods to barter.  If you so choose, you can dispense charitably to your neighbors in need.

Purchase a one year’s supply of long term storage food for your family now.  Specifically, get the Mountain House Ultimate-Pak Food Reserve from Nitro-Pak.  The Ultimate-Pak Food Reserve protects a family of four persons for three months, or it’s a year supply for one person.
