Could Your Survival Garden Become an “Outlaw Garden?”
Recently I’ve been seeing items on the Internet about HR 875, the Food Safety Modernization Act, which is proposed legislation before Congress. There is concern that this and similar legislation could virtually outlaw organic farming and gardening, right down to your backyard garden. It sounds too broad sweeping to be true, and you know how easy it is for rumors on the Web to set fires, so to speak.. Besides, how could such legislation be enforced if it passes? Nonetheless, could the threat be real?
As you may know, there’s relatively little oversight of produce coming into the
There’s an excellent, thorough examination of HR 875 you can read by clicking here. Find another overview here. As this legislation is written now, there’s apparently no direct threat to your backyard survival garden. Could there be at some point? Maybe. The language is so broad and vague and speaks of “minimum standards” relating to a number of areas of food production. There may indeed be fallout for farmers markets and organic farming and gardening practices. Seed cleaning and storage will be regulated, and that could certainly have a bearing on gardening and farming efforts.
Is it too extreme to say that if gardening is outlawed, then gardeners will be outlaws? Maybe it’s too early for such a thought. Nonetheless, you can bet any food safety laws passed will favor multinational corporations, and our food supply will be affected one way or another.
This is in part why you should certainly be building a food storage pantry if you’re not already doing so. If you’re gardening, get open pollinated, non-hybrid seeds, which you can save from the plants and grow them the following season. Nitro-Pak has both long term storage food and cans of survival seeds.
Nitro-Pak warns that it’s a good idea to get their survival seeds while you can because they can’t always keep them in stock. You’ll want to get some of these seeds because Nitro-Pak has put their survival seed cans together with the help of a top seed producer. Each #10 size can contains 16 non-hybrid varieties of seeds, including sweet corn, pole beans, peas, carrots, tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce, radishes, Swiss chard, and more. Growing information is also included with each can.
