Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’re aware there’s a great deal of concern about a flu outbreak that has made news in recent days.  Thousands have become ill and over a hundred have died so far.  It’s getting global attention.  They’re calling it swine flu, but it’s said this is a virus like no other.  It’s said to have swine and bird flu genes.

Is this the Big One we’ve been warned about for years now?  Could it be a repeat of the dreaded 1918 flu, or will it pass as the swine flu scare in 1976?  The government thought it necessary to declare a public health emergency Sunday.  What does that really mean?  Are drug and vaccine companies prepared?  Is there more to this than what we’re being told?  There are more questions than answers at this point.

Since this flu started in Mexico, is it being spread by illegal immigrants?  Is it a prelude to what may be ahead?  Survival Sam believes we could one day be victimized by something created in a lab–a premeditated biowarfare outbreak–possibly set loose or at least allowed by rogue elements in our own government.  What if this doesn’t amount to much, but is used to implement certain measures of regulation and control?

            If you’re interested in tracking reports of the flu, you can go to Google maps or Health Map and configure your settings for swine flu.  You can find official government information at the CDC’s site.

  I’ve shared a few thoughts about flu before on this blog, mainly about bird flu, but the potential threat of bird or swine flu could be great.  On the other hand, maybe this will all blow over.  Being prepared for a flu outbreak is a survival concern, regardless of the source or type.  Are you prepared to be quarrantined for weeks in your home, either by edict of authorities or your own choice for self protection?
