            With hurricane season here again, It’s important to note the Miami Herald reported recently that the designated head of FEMA says everyone should be prepared at home for disasters.  Craig Fugate, Florida’s former disaster chief, says it’s not just the government that needs to be cooperative and ready.  He believes we should each be ready, since we could save more lives if we looked out for each other.

            Here are Fugate’s recommendations.

*   Develop a family disaster plan.

*   Take a disaster or first-aid training course and learn a skill.

*   In the event of a disaster, secure family first, and then go check on a neighbor.

            FEMA is stepping up its hurricane preparedness efforts.  Naturally, they want to distance themselves from the Bush administration’s actions, particularly regarding the response to Katrina.  It remains to be seen whether they can pull it off, since a repeat of Katrina or Andrew will be a challenge to any administration.  However, Fugate oversaw response to four hurricanes in Florida in 2004, which should be to his advantage.

            This is another one of those times when what the government says makes sense.  We should each be prepared, whether we live in hurricane country or tornado alley.  Being prepared means there’s that much less dependence on government and their response, or lack thereof.  Of course, do it for yourself, your family, and your neighbors, not merely to do a favor for Uncle Sam.
