            Government by Emergency, by Gary North, is a book that’s been around for at least a couple of decades, and it’s still worth having in your survival library if you don’t own a copy already.

            There’s a great deal of concern about the present government taking us down the path to greater regulation and socialism.  The serious ammunition shortages in the past months is evidence of that.  Previously I’ve discussed the looming threat of martial law.  An emergency of some kind could kick it into place.

            Having said that, there are those who say documentation proves we’ve been in a state of national emergency since 1933 or even 1917, and it’s never been revoked.  Plus, there are dozens of presidential executive orders already in place waiting to be acted upon, which will affect just about any area of life you can think of.  Prices could be frozen.  Banking will be greatly regulated.  Media could be under direct government control.  Businesses and property may be confiscated.  And on it goes.

            The type of emergency that trips the big trigger could be anything.  Maybe another 9/11.  Maybe a perceived worsening of the swine flu.  Maybe a further worsening of the economy.  About anything may be trumped up with life changing consequences to follow.  This is the world in which we live now.  Do we fear it?  Do we fight it?  How should we best prepare?

            Gary North in Government by Emergency recognized this precarious state of things long before 9/11 and offers many recommendations and solutions that are still valid today.  For example, how do we cope under bureaucratic stranglehold?  What happens when bureaucracies and government regulations break down?  What loopholes or opportunities might there be for you and me?  What examples can we follow in such times?
